Wind, Water for Life installs and maintains wind powered water pumps in rural Senegalese villages. The company uses a renewable energy source – wind – to supply over 150 villages and approximately 30,000 people with easily accessible and often purified water. This service improves health and reduces the drudgery involved with water collection without negatively impacting the environment.
In countless villages throughout the developing world, women and children spend large portions of their days collecting water. Often traveling more than 3 kilometers in each direction to collect unclean water for cooking, cleaning, drinking and bathing, villagers who lack connection to national water systems loose time and health in pursuit of water.
Many of the wind powered water pumps in Senegal were established in the 1980’s by an Italian non-governmental organization. When the grant funds dried up, the pumps were abandoned and left in disrepair. E+Co assisted entrepreneur Michel Tine with transitioning the water pumps from the NGO to a viable business – Wind, Water for Life. Subsequently, E+Co loaned the newly established company US$22, 395 to begin the business of repairing, maintaining and installing wind powered water pumps. This investment was made working with the Africa Rural Energy Enterprise Development program and local partner ENDA.
