WilkinSolar sells solar home systems and solar powered lanterns to urban and rural Ghanaian households that lack access to electricity. A spin-off of Wilkins Engineering Company Limited, a privately owned Electrical Engineering Services company, WilkinSolar was established to focus solely on the import, sales, installation and maintenance of Solar equipment in Ghana. WilkinSolar’s lanterns provide clean, modern energy to more than 3,000 households. Wilkins’s solar systems light schools and power street lights, contributing to quality of life and safety.
Many poor urban and rural Ghanaian families rely on kerosene and firewood for lighting. Both fuel sources are harmful to health, dangerous when used indoors and contribution to environmental degradation in the form of greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. WilkinSolar’s solar home systems and solar lanterns replace kerosene lanterns and firewood with a renewable source of energy and advance modern energy usage in Africa.
E+Co, in conjunction with the United Nations’ Africa Rural Energy Enterprise Development (AREED) program and local partner KITE, assisted WilkinSolar with the development of its business plan and the formal appraisal of its business. The AREED team conducted due diligence to determine the company’s preparedness and capability to successfully implement the business strategy and analyzed the growth potential of solar power in Ghana. Utilizing its extensive experience in solar energy, E+Co scrutinized the business proposal and made a US$127,000 investment in the company to help it establish operations.
