First Investment 2003 Entrepreneur Vladimir Delagneau

Tecnosol provides clean energy alternatives for the lighting and refrigeration needs of rural Nicaraguan households, schools and hospitals that have no access to the main electricity grid. Tecnosol has installed over 47,000 systems and currently offsets 35,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. In November 2006, Tecnosol was awarded the Renewable Energy & Energy Savings Award by President Mr. Enrique Bolaños of Nicaragua. In 2007, Tecnosol was the recipient of E+Co’s first US$1 million investment.

The Need

More than 75% of rural Nicaragua is un-electrified.  For the 4 million people living in rural communities, this means limited access to refrigeration and lights in homes, schools and hospitals.  Productivity at night, including homework and income generating activities, is minimal due to an absence of electricity.

E+Co Value Added

In 2003, E+Co provided a US$100,000 loan to finance additional inventory purchases to expand Tecnosol’s market and provide short term credit to its customers. Tecnosol fully repaid this loan. In 2004, E+Co invested another US$200,000 in the company for the expansion of its operations. In 2005, Tecnosol opened four additional branch offices in rural communities in Nicaragua. E+Co provided enterprise development services to assist Tecnosol in undertaking a market study for the company’s expansion. Now with over 12 branch offices, Tecnosol is one of the largest suppliers of solar panels in Central America.
