The Anlong Tamei Community Energy Cooperative generates electricity for over 250 rural Cambodian households using biomass gasification systems. The Coop uses agricultural waste, such as rice husks, to create energy for lighting. Reliable lighting in homes has lead to an increase in the amount of homework students can complete. The village has seen the opening of a water-bottling plant, a coffee shop, a hair dresser, and other small businesses since the installation of the biomass system. Two night schools were recently opened due to the availability of light at night. They are so popular that a third school is in the planning stages.
Until the creation of the cooperative in 2004 the community relied entirely on wood fuel, kerosene lamps, candles and batteries periodically charged by individuals with small diesel generators for electricity. The Coop became the first Cambodian village based energy cooperative to operate its own electricity generation and distribution system.
E+Co assisted the cooperative in developing its expansion plans and made a US$18,000 investment allowing it to double its capacity and bring clean, reliable, modern energy services to many more villagers.
